Understanding Gen Y

Have you ever struggled to connect with the youth and young adults in your church?  Your ministry?  Even the ones in your home? Are you perplexed by why young people keep leaving the church?  Are you out of ideas on how to keep them there? Well you’re not alone!

Generation Y have a unique worldview which calls for new approaches if we want to get through to them.  Hyperreality, consumerism and self obsession are but just a few of the phenomenon that characterise the age we live in and the church needs to be able to understand their effects if we are to reach the people who are affected by them.

JumpStart Ministries would like to invite you to attend Understanding Gen Y, a seminar on the generation Y culture, their worldviews and their motivators.  The speaker for this event is Mark Sayers, a highly acclaimed speaker and author who specialises in interpreting popular culture from a Christian viewpoint (visit www.marksayersthinks.com for more info on Mark).

Apart from being interesting and educational, we are also hoping that this event will be a good opportunity for youth leaders to connect with, support and encourage each other.  After all, we are all in the same boat and facing the same challenges!  The seminar will be an interactive one, with the opportunity for discussion, experience sharing and other forms of audience participation.  We will also be encouraging delegates to have lunch together after the seminar.  Details of the seminar are as follows:

Date: Saturday 4th July, 2009
Time: 9:30am – 12:30pm
Venue: Box Hill Library, 1040 Whitehorse Road, Box Hill 3128
RSVP: Saturday 27th June, 2009 for catering purposes

This is a free event and morning tea is provided.  Places are limited so get in quick!  For more information please contact Peter on 0409 791 594 or info@jumpstart.org.au.

Just Me

Upcoming performance from our friends at Candlelight Productions.

justmeComedian Michael Connell (Comedy Festival, Youngblood Tour) joined Candlelight for Squeaky Clean Comedy and he’s back! He merges stand up, film and music in an autobiographical show about learning how to be happy being ‘Just Me’. It’s an inspiring show about following your dreams…no matter what anyone else thinks.

He’s clean, legitimately funny, a sudoku champion and a supremo on the harmonica. This is your chance to see “a comedian with a promising career ahead of him” (Inpress) … His show is intelligent, moving, and most importantly, funny! “You’ll be impressed” (Beat Magazine).

Performances: Thurs 25th Sept - Sun 12th Oct
Tue-Sun @ 8.15pm
Matinees (Sat & Sun) @ 3pm [27-28 Sept, 11-12 Oct]

(No shows Oct. 4th or 5th Oct as he’ll be performing at Blackstump Arts Festival in NSW!)

Please spread the word and invite anyone you think might be interested or might benefit from hearing his story. School and community groups can contact Candlelight directly to discuss large group deals.

chevaletFour (Sept. 18th-20th) performances only!

Cute Girls Love to Crochet weaves heart-melting and witty words with beautiful, quirky music that sounds like it was written for the Amélie soundtrack. It is the follow-up to Chevalet’s gut-wrenchingly beautiful album A Souvenir of Sadness and A Bottle of Bliss, and this one is infused with a gentle hope and a striking beauty that makes you want to sit in a corner of a cafe in Paris and watch the world go by.

Cameron Semmens from the show Squeaky Clean Comedy (and resident poet on Light FM) returns in Chevalet with Mike Carney (composer, on piano) & Rod Gear (from Sons of Korah on double bass). Visit www.myspace.com/chevalet - listen to their music and you’ll fall in love with them too.

There are only 4 performances, so tickets are limited - book now to avoid missing out. It’s only 3 weeks away!

Bring knitting or crocheting to do on stage during the performance and they’ll buy you a drink…
